#Broadband research.

Your task is to present some information about broadband on your blog.
You are to answer the following questions:


1. What is broadband?

Broadband is the act of using signals over a wide range of frequencies in high-capacity telecommunications, broadband is most common for the use and access of the Internet.


2. Outline the methods of delivery of broadband (wireless, cable, ADSL, and fibre)?


Wireless: Wireless consists of computer networking, broadcasting, telephony, or telegraphy using radio signals.


Cable: Cable consists of a device, which is a modem that converts signals used in a computer to signals that can be transmitted over cable television networks and vice verse. Fox tel, is able to do this (i think lol)


ADSL: ADSL stands for Asymmetre Digital Subsciber Line. ADSL is slowly becoming more and more widely available and can allow very good Internet connection. ADSL works by splitting your phone line into separate channels, which is one for data (the Internet) and the other one for your phone calls (voice). This means you can talk on the phone and also still be connected to the Internet at the very same time.


Fibre: This involves a method of transmitting information from one place to another by sending pules of light through an optical fiber. This light comes in the form of electromagnetic carrier wave that is modulated to carry information.


3. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each method.


Wireless:
Advantages:
  • Include faster Internet
  • Cheaper.
  • Does not require as much planning and work spent on installation.
  • Implementation cost is cheaper than wired network.
  • Ideal for non-reachable places such as across river or mountain rural area.
  • Ideal for temporary network setups.
Disadvantages:
  • Would be that people could easily hack into your connection unless it's password protected.
  • Less secure because hacker's laptop can act as Access Point meaning that if you connected to their laptop, they'll read all your personal information such as user name, password.
  • Affected by the surroundings such as walls (blocking), microwave oven (interference) and far distance.


Cable:
Advantages:
  • It does not require allocation of radio spectrum, that is you can have as much bandwidth as you want as long as you install enough cables.
  • It is relatively immune to interference.
  • It can be more secure.


Disadvantages:
  • Requires a fixed physical connection between the source and destination and therefore does not support mobile applications.
  • It usually costs alot to install.
  • Although cable has the advantage of not requiring the legal/political process of allocating bandwidth, it will usually require a legal/political process of approving the running of cables.
ADSL:
Advantages:
  • ADSL is much quicker.
  • High speed connection.
  • Fixed monthly cost.
  • Good value for money.
  • Not extra wiring, ADSL uses the existing phone line.
  • Lower pings in online games.
  • No More dropped connections.


Disadvantages:
  • Service not available everywhere.
  • ADSL works better when closer to the ISP's central office.
  • Variable speeds depending upon time of day.
  • Faster download than upload.
  • Line testing take a long time.
Fibre:
Advantages:
  • Internet access includes extremely high band with, with no other cable-based data transmission medium offers the bandwidth that fiber does.
  • It is also easy to accommodate increasing band with.
  • Resistance to electromagnetic interference and early detect of cable damage and secure transmissions.
Disadvantages:
  • Include installation costs.
  • Special test equipment are often required.
  • Susceptibility to physical damage and wildlife damage to fiber optic cable (eg, many birds find the "Kevlar" reinforcing material of fiber cable jackets appealing as nesting material, therefore they peck t the fiber cable jackets to utilize bits of material).
4. Give examples of broadband providers and identify the costs.

5. The Federal Government is thinking of rolling out a nation broadband network (The NBN).


a. What method of delivery it will use? The network would use fibre to the premises (FTTP), fixed wireless and satellite technologies to provide connections. This will be the first time, in Australia that retail service providers are going to be able to access infrastructure that is not owned or operated by a competitors.


b. The expected speed? Up to gigabyte per second.


c. The expected costs? The expected costs would include investing $43 billion on the NBN plan. Although the NBN co corporate plan confirmed that the total capital expenditure for the project would be estimated only $35.9 billion. Which is less than the originality thought. It is believe that most of this money will be from tax payers.


6. Do you think Australians should invest in The NBN?

I still don't have a huge idea about what The NBN is, because I'm not bothered reading all that information, but i have read opinions about it on "yahoo answers" and people have been mostly against the idea. They think it's too much money to build it. People believe that they find no benefit from the idea as well, people need wireless Internet, due to laptop requirements etc, without using a modem stick thing. As well for someone like me, my family has one modem for the main computer and then we require wireless because other members have laptops and need Internet connection and wireless is the most suitable for our needs. People need the Internet everywhere they go, at games, on trips away, in office, at home and maybe even over seas. People describe the NBN as 'weird connection'. From the opinions i have read, i don't think i would like using the NBN because well, I'm happy with what i have at the moment at home, and i don't think i would like change at the moment. As well as that, i think it would be too expensive.


Although others think it will bring them faster Internet access and connection, although it may take a odd 20 years to build, and by that time, better Internet access will be more available and more advanced by now, with the growing rate of modern technology, by the time it is built, there may of been a faster and even better way to build something similar to the NBN system, and that would be a waste of money because by the time it's built and ready to go, technology may have been so advanced by then that a better Internet access will be available.
